Maciej Makalowski is an interdisciplinary artist born in Poznań, Poland and raised in Montréal, Washington DC, and central Pennsylvania. His paintings, photographs and films explore political histories, popular culture, and fringe spirituality. He is a founding member of the Basement artist collective in the Mission district of San Francisco.

This work comes from Makalowski's solo show, "Video Limits," the inaugural show at the former City Limits apartment gallery in 2012. Makalowski, who frequently uses portraiture in both his photographs and paintings, took hundreds of screenshots from movies and television shows, searching for ways to indirectly create portraits. The resulting "portraits" of actors, characters and media personalities are as recognizable as they are bizarre.
